52 Ancestors Week #26 - Clara Eliya McNeal

Clara is my 2nd great grand aunt.

Clara was born on 25 Apr 1882 in Beason, Indiana to Charles Daniel McNeal (1858-1937) and Mary Louisa Alfred (1858-1941).  Clara had twelve siblings:
Clara married Brady Hollenbaugh (1877-1937) on 14 Dec 1899 in Ogle County, Illinois.  They had four children:
  • Charles L. (1901-?)
  • Julia E. (1903-?)
  • Helen S. (1907-?)
  • Lewis S. (1909-1984)
Clara and family lived in Byron, Illinois according to the 1900, 1910, 1930 and 1940 federal census.  The 1920 census had Clara living in Rockvale, Illinois.

It looks like after Brady's death in 1937, Clara moved in with her mother, Mary per the 1940 census.

Clara died on 16 Sep 1976 at age 94.

52 Ancestors Week #25 - Lena Mathilda Carlson

Lena is my 2nd great grand aunt.

Lena Mathilda Carlson was born on 14 Nov 1877 in Oster Yttermakr, Narpes, Finland to Carl Eric Gullens and Augistine Haldga.  Lena had four siblings:

  • Edla Gullens (1864-?)
  • Johanna Carlson (1866-1952)
  • Erick Andrew Carlson (my 2nd great grandfather; 1873-1925)
  • August Carlson (unknown dates)

It appears Lena arrived in the US around 1896.   Lena married Adrian Hannus (1868-1917).  Together they had eleven children:

  • Segur Sigfrid (1898-1957)
  • Richard C. (1899-?)
  • Hulda Linnea (1901-?)
  • Elsie Adeline (1902-1997)
  • John Waldermar (1904-1915)
  • Edwin A. (1905-1968)
  • Hjalmar (1907-1991)
  • Leonard C. (1909-1999)
  • Hilding G. (1912-1985)
  • Evelyn (1913-?)
  • Helen (1915-2012)
According to the 1910 census, Lena and her family settled in Worcester, Massachusetts and continued living there in all subsequent census through 1930.

Lena was left a widow at age 40 when Adrian died.  I have no record of her remarrying.  I wonder what her life was like trying to raise a large family of eleven children as a single mother in the early twentieth century.

Lena died on 04 Oct 1973 at age 96 in Worcester, Massachusetts.  Lena is buried at Old Swedish Cemetery in Worcester.
