John M. McNeal was born in 1844 in Connersville, Indiana to Robert E. McNeal (1821-1894) and Elizabeth Ann Stamm (1826-1915).  John was the second of nine children:

• Mary Elizabeth (1850-1938)
• George (1856-1874)
• Sophia (1856-1857)
• Charles Daniel (1858-1937)
• Anthony Ellsworth (1859-1927)
• Kathryn (1862-1945)

John married Margaret Ann Leach (1840-1913) on 05 Apr 1865 in Guthrie County, Iowa.  They had six children:

• Edith Estelle (1866-1950)
• Theresa Iona (1867-?)
• Grace (1869-1942)
• Otto

John died on 10 Nov 1870 at age 26.
