52 Ancestors Week #47 - Dora Allen Haskin

Dora is my 3rd great grandmother.


Dora Allen Haskin was born on December 10, 1873 in Richland, Wisconsin to John Wesley Haskin (1833-1901) and Orrel Maria Waterman (1835-1910).  Dora had seven siblings:

  • Emma Elmyra (1862-1962)
  • Ervin Lincoln (1864-1947)
  • Flora M. (1867-1940)
  • Bertha Mabel (1876-1961)

According to the 1880 census, Dora and her family lived in Ithaca, Wisconsin.

On August 12, 1894, Dora married Charles Leslie Skone Hodges (1865-1940) in Spring Grove, Wisconsin.  They had ten children:

  • Oral Marie (my 2nd great grandmother; 1896-1980)
  • John (1898-1898)
  • Mila Lulu (1900-1903)
  • Esther Adelle (1903-1994)
  • Charles Howard (1904-1970)
  • George Clark (1906-1974)
  • Dean Allen (1908-1972)
  • Ada Margaret (1911-1974)
  • Laura Juanita (1914-1970)
According to the 1900's census, Dora and family were living in Madison City, Wisconsin.  The 1910 census, Dora was living in Leaf River and by 1920, Dora would have moved to Rockford, Illinois were she remained until her death.

Dora died on April 10, 1952 at age 78.  Dora is buried at Byron Cemetery in Byron, Illinois.

52 Ancestors Week #46 - Jacob E. Keller

Jacob is my 3rd grant grandfather.



Jacob E. Keller was born on July 17, 1843 in Catawissa, Pennsylvania to Charles George Keller (1816-1878) and Catherine Miller (1811-1907).    Jacob is the fifth of nine children:
  • Elizabeth Sarah (1834-1911)
  • Lucy Ann (1836-1873)
  • Benjamin Franklin (1838-1863)
  • Sarah (1839-1918)
  • Phoebe Alice (1846-1934)
  • Caroline (1848-1922)
  • Rebecca M. (1852-1919)
  • Frances (1854-1935)
  • James (1863-1929)
Jacob was in the military from August 29, 1864 to June 2, 1865, when he was honorably discharged.  I would assume he saw battle during the civil war.

On July 4, 1868, Jacob married Mary Elizabeth Newcomer (1850-1895).   They were married in Juda, Wisconsin. They had nine children:

  • George Frank (1869-1925)
  • Phoebe Alice (1870-1958)
  • Charles A. (1872-1947)
  • Peter (1875-1900)
  • William Henry (1878-1954)
  • Nellie Mae (1881-1962)
  • Samuel Arthur (1884-1936)
  • Katherine Viola (my 2nd great grandmother; 1887-1945)
  • Clyde Eugene (1889-1968)
The federal census between 1870 and 1900 have Jacob and his family living in Spring Grove, Wisconsin. I also found Jacob and his family in the 1900 census living in Pennsylvania and the 1910 census also places him in Pennsylvania.  By the 1930's census, Jacob is back in Wisconsin.

Jacob died on October 27, 1931 at age 88 of a heart attack.  Jacob is buried at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Brodhead, Wisconsin.

52 Ancestors Week #45 - Sarah Jane Stevens

Sarah is my 3rd great grandmother.


Sarah Jane Stevens was born on March 19, 1864 in Bay City, Michigan to Amon Robert Stevens (1832-1918) and Anna Orilla Mattison (1824-1885).  Sarah was the youngest of six children:


  • Julies Henry (1854-?)
  • Erza Mattison (1857-1891)
  • Mary Arvilla (1858-1938)
  • Julies Edgar (1861-1952)
  • Emma Marie (1862-1940)

Sarah was living in Jackson Ward, Michigan according to the 1870s census and in Lapeer, Michigan according to the 1880s census.  

On August 22, 1882, Sarah married George Rood Firman (1864-1930) in Lapeer, Michigan.  They had six children:

  • Horace E. (1883-1924)
  • Della H. (1885-?)
  • Harriet A. (1886-?)
  • George Deo (my 2nd great grandfather; 1887-1973)
  • Dana Carter (1889-1972)
  • Dale (1896-1964)

Sarah and her family lived in Detroit, Michigan between 1900 and 1920 per the federal census.  The 1930 and 1940 census have Sarah living in Highland Park, Michigan.    Sarah died on April 13, 1948 at age 84 in Wayne, Michigan.

52 Ancestors Week #44 - Johan August Quist

Johan is my 3rd great grandfather.

Johan was born on December 18, 1839 in Sweden.  I do not know who Johan's parents where at this point.  Johan married Sofia Petersdotter (1838-1891).  They had six children:


  • John Martin (1863-1937)
  • Solomon Anskarius (1870-1882)
  • Clara Wilhelmina (my 2nd great grandmother; 1873-1926)
  • Anna Teresia (1878-1945)
  • Frank (1883-?)
  • Selma (?)

According to the 1880 census, Johan and his family arrived in the states in 1880 and they were living in Sycamore, Illinois.  Johan would continue living in Sycamore until his death.

Sofia died on March 21, 1891 and Johan would remarry by November 20, 1891 to Albertina Carlson (1846-1905).

Johan died on July 20, 1901 at age 61.  Johan is buried at Elmwood Cemetery in Sycamore, Illinois.
