John Howland was born in Fernstanton, England in about 1591 to Henry Howland (?-1635) and Margaret (?-1629).  John left England aboard the Mayflower in 1620 accompany Governor Carver as his manservant.  John almost didn't survive the trip to America as he was thrown from the ship during a storm but was lucky enough to grab on to a top sail.  At this point, John did not have any children so 1000's of his descendants including me wouldn't exist today had he not grabbed that top sail.

Though John was just a servant aboard the ship he was a signer on the Mayflower compact on 11 Nov 1620.

On 23 Mar 1623, John married Elizabeth Tilley (1607-1687), whose family also traveled over on the Mayflower and Elizabeth's father John also signed the Mayflower compact.  Both of Elizabeth's parents died during the first winter in America.

John and Elizabeth had 10 children and it is believed that since all ten survived to adulthood and had children of their own that John and Elizabeth have more descendants living today than any other Mayflower passenger.

  • Desire (my 11th great grandmother; 1623-1683)

  • Joseph (1640-1704)
  • Jabez (1644-1712)
  • Ruth (1646-1679)
  • Isaac (1649-173)

Siggy was the youngest of four children:
Siggy was married to a woman named Berta.  They would divorce.  Together they had two daughters.

Siggy was in the Army during WWII.  After the war, Siggy worked as a telephone lineman and knowing that war was eminent in Korea he reenlisted and was assigned to the 24th Battalion.  Siggy sent regular letters back home to his family mostly his brother Walt (my great grandfather).

When the ground battles started, Siggy was sent to Seoul and they were sent to establish communication with Taejon and Pusan.  During the Battle of Taejon, Siggy was unfortunately killed during battle on 21 Jul 1950 at the age of 43.   Siggy's status was initially listed as missing in action and he was buried in a UN cemetery.  After the Korean War was over the cemetery was exhumed and Siggy's remains were returned to his family in the US in 1953.  Siggy is now buried at Fairview Memorial Gardens in DeKalb, Illinois.

52 Ancestors 2015 Week #11 - Johann Georg Gruen

Johann is my 5th great grandfather.

I haven't found much Irish in my direct family tree so in honor of Saint Patrick's Day I am picking a Gruen which would eventually evolve into the last name Greene.

Johann Georg was born on 25 Apr 1783 in Baumerlenbach, Oberohringen, Jagstkreis, Wuerttemberg (now Germany) to Georg Simon Gruen (1753-1825) and Maria Barbara Herldarth (1755-1822).  Johann had seven siblings:
  • Johann Friederick (1780-1780)
  • Catharina Dorthea (1781-1865)
  • Johan Abraham (1785-1794)
  • Christina Braven (1789-?)
  • Rosina Elizabeth (1791-1791)
  • Rosina Elizabeth (1794-1794)
  • Johan Simon (1797-1797)
Johann's parents really seem to like the name Johann as it is the name of all their sons though two did in infancy.  There are also two Rosina Elizabeth's, are they one in the same or they used the name again after the death of their first Rosina.

Johann married Christiana Elizabeth Arnold (?-1819) on 10 Dec 1805 in Evangelish, Baumerlenbach, Oberohringen, Jagstkreis, Wuerttemberg.  They had eight children:

  • Christiana Elisabeth Dorothea (1806-1808)
  • Christina Dorothea (1808-1877)
  • Eva Elizabetha (1809-?)
  • Baby Girl (1810-1810)
  • John Georg (1811-?)
  • Fredrich Ludwig (1812-1820)
  • Edward Alex (1814-1815)
  • Georg Michael (1818-?)
After Christiana died, Johann remarried Wilhelmina Jacobina Leiss (my 5th great grandmother; 1802-1885) on 13 Nov 1820 in Evangelish, Baumerlenbach, Oberohringen, Jagstkreis, Wuerttemberg.  They had seven children:

  • Elizabeth Dorothy
  • John George
  • Christina Carolina Jacobina (1821-1876)
  • Wilhelmina Rossina (1822-?)
  • John Jacob (my 4th great grandfather; 1826-1892)
  • Mary J. Clara (1839-1865)
  • Thomas George (1842-1865)
Mary is the first of Johann and Wilhelmina's children to be born in the US in 1839.   It doesn't look like all their children immigrated to the states with them as Christina died in Germany in 1876.

Johann died on 03 Mar 1867 at age 83 in Morgantown, Indiana.

52 Ancestors 2015 Week #4 - Joseph Willard McKee

I received an e-mail this past week that two of the ancestors I had profiled during 2014 were not even my relatives!  Week 39's Amos Garth NormanWeek 43's Estella Emma Goewey who I had thought were parents to my 2nd great grandmother I profiled in Week 3, Ada Viola Norman.  Turns out that their daughter named Alta Viola never married or had any children.  This also means that I do not have birth or death information for Ada Viola (or possibly Adeline).

Anyway, this week's theme from No Story to Small is an ancestor with the closest birthday to yours.  The closest I could find is Joseph Willard McKee, my 2nd cousin 3x removed.

Joseph Willard McKee was born on 26 Oct 1908 in Missouri to Elia Arthur McKee (1882-1968) and Georgiana Carrico (1887-1960).  Joseph was the oldest of six children:

  • Arthur Harold (1911-1982)
